Ramadan Campaign 2019 – Hunger-free packages for Kabul and Herat

Kabul and Herat
Project start: 2019

Completed

Target achieved:
35.000 €

Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, the majority of the population is undernourished and suffers from hunger. Widows and their children, who are socially marginalized, are particularly hard hit. To help the disadvantaged, we launched the campaign at Ramadan 2019.

INITIAL SITUATION

Our CEO Hila and our association member Arthur visited the Pul-e-Sheena camp as part of a project trip at the end of March and saw for themselves the living conditions there, where refugees from all parts of the country and returnees from Pakistan live in mud houses covered with simple tarpaulins. Our member Winuss Azizi found a similarly unacceptable situation in Camp Ansar in Herat, where the only shelter for the refugee families is in old UNICEF tents. In both camps there is a lack of basic foodstuffs to ensure daily survival.

PROBLEM SOLUTION

As every year, we were once again actively supported in 2019. This year, just in time for the start of Ramadan, we provided 255 refugee families in Camp Ansar in Herat and 520 refugee families in Camp Pul-e-Sheena in Kabul with basic foodstuffs, including oil, flour, sugar, tea, beans, rice and a 50-liter bucket of water.

We rely on the principle of direct aid – in this case, this means that our cooperation partner, the Afghan Women’s Association, and local members buy the food and distribute it directly to the families – fairly, transparently and shortly before the fasting month. As soon as the families’ needs were met, the surplus donations went directly into our school building projects.
